Project Description

Zermatt Photography Trip

Have you ever wondered why Toblerone chocolate makes you want to climb a mountain?

Besides the obvious mountain shape of the bite-size pieces, the packaging of this chocolate features one of the most photographed and well-known mountains worldwide: the Matterhorn.

Join us to Zermatt from August 23-25.

Join us on a full weekend of hiking and landscape photography – being outdoors all day (and possibly even during the night), sleeping in the high alpine and enjoying a good meal after a day of hiking in the most beautiful surrounding. Combined with the most beautiful locations for photography, personal advice from our teachers and a fun group experience – it doesn‘t get any better than this!

Please note:
This trip will focus on hands-on photography
rather than covering ‘the basics’. For the complete beginners, we recommend one of our beginner classes in advance for preparation.

This trip will feature some hiking to find locations and photo spots, so a basic fitness level will help you enjoy the trip.
We will not do mountaineering and the trails will be easy to walk, but you should be prepared for a multi-hour-hike carrying all your equipment (photography gear as well as clothing for the weekend).

This photo weekend will be much more than just rolling up on location, snap a shot and drive off. Working the compositions and exploring the scene will be an important part of the experience and involves some hiking as well as dedication to stay up late and get up early.
To get the most out of his trip, we recommend some base fitness and willingness for a certain lack of sleep – don‘t worry, the views and experience a sunrise in the mountains will make up for it.

You should be able to operate your camera confidently and know the basics about composition and light – if you don‘t feel comfortable outside the „Auto“ mode of your camera we highly recommend taking one of our beginners’ courses first.

As far as photography equipment goes we recommend bringing:

– a DSLR or mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses

– a wider lens for the grand vista (at least 24mm at the wide end on full frame, e.g. a 24-70mm)
– a telephoto lens for details (e.g. a 70-200mm on full frame)

– a tripod for longer exposures and night skies

To get the most out of this trip also consider:

– a wide angle lens (e.g. 16-35mm on full frame)

– a circular polarizer (C-POL)

– neutral density filters (ND filter) for long exposures

– external shutter release for using the bulb mode

Remember that the weather can change fast in the mountains and temperatures can drop drastically as soon as the sun sets. Also standing behind a camera in the wind on 2500m during the night will be colder than you think. Please bring appropriate clothing for hiking and being outdoors.
We recommend the following:
– hiking boots that are appropriate for hikes of T2 – T3, as well as hiking poles if you prefer
– a sturdy backpack that will carry your camera gear and clothes comfortably

– weatherproof clothing like a wind- and waterproof jacket and a proper hiking pant

– warm clothing for the nights like a down jacket, hat and gloves
– also don‘t forget sunglasses and sun-protection
– for the showers at the Fluhalp you will have to bring your own towel

– last but not least: a head torch or some kind of flashlight for the hiking during nighttime or low light

The Matterhorn is one of the worlds most famous mountain peaks and for sure one of the iconic shots when it comes to landscape photography. Standing almost 4’500m tall at the border of Swiss canton Wallis and the Italian Aosta valley it shows a significant and distinct shape that is best visible (and photographed) from the east.
To get the best views and compositions of the Swiss classic, we will set camp at the Fluhalp and visit all the famous mountain lakes, reflecting the Matterhorn like a mirror. The Stellisee will be on our spot list as well as the Grindjisee and 3 other mountain lakes. We will explore the high alpine region of Zermatt, visit the rural mountain village of Findeln and enjoy the incredible panorama from sunrise to sunset.

We will be accommodated at the Fluhalp on 2620m – beautiful panorama and Matterhorn view included. We will have shared and private rooms available. The accommodation covers breakfast and dinner, however, the Fluhalp is not a hotel but a true mountain hut. Showers are available but you will have to bring your own towels. If you wish to stay in a private room or a double bedroom with your partner or friend, please let us know.

Even though 2 meals are included, hiking in the mountains and being outdoors all day will make you hungry. Please bring your own snacks and supplies for the day and don‘t forget a water bottle.

What’s included?

– a full weekend of photography in the most spectacular landscape, including sunset and sunrise shooting, astro and night-sky shooting
– 2 nights at the Fluhalp in 2-bed or private rooms
– 2x breakfast and dinner
– cable car ride from Zermatt to Blauherd at the beginning
– help and assistance by our enthusiastic teacher during the entire weekend
– incredible mountain views
– the most satisfying feeling after a day hiking and photographing outdoors in the mountains

Not included: towels for the shower at Fluhalp
, snacks and supplies during the day , beverages at Fluhalp, arrival and departure costs, insurance

Our highest priority is always the safety of our group, followed by satisfaction and the best experience. We do our best to make this trip as valuable as possible for you and therefore reserve the right to rearrange the program due to unexpected changes and weather conditions. Unfortunately, weather can be unpredictable in the mountains so we can’t guarantee certain compositions to happen. But the trip will take place in any kind of weather conditions as long as there is no obvious danger for the health and well being of the participants – that includes rain and cold temperatures. Not included in your rate are beverages at the Fluhalp, arrival and departure costs from and to Zermatt, travel insurance and any optional excursions you may choose to book besides the planned program.
Please note that, even though our teacher joining you on the trip is an outdoors and hiking enthusiast, we can not provide the service of a certified mountain guide. By booking the trip you confirm, that you are aware of the risks that being in the mountains can hold and agree, that Swiss Photo Club is not responsible any kind of injury or issue concerning your health and well being during or as a result of this trip.

Note: There will be a fixed schedule every day, but we will have the flexibility to spend more time in specific places if needed/asked.
Also, we hope to have perfect weather during the trip, but in case of unusual conditions, we might make changes with the group’s agreement.
